From Yard to Jar Project explored wild herbs at Nature Paavola
Participants in the "From Yard to Jar" project visited Nature Paavola's Tupa in the village of Vehu, Soini, at the end of May to learn about utilizing wild herbs and processing natural raw materials.
The project, initiated in spring by Leader Kuudestaan ry, aims to inspire people of all ages to cultivate, preserve, and utilize the opportunities provided by nature. The background of the project includes a growing interest in self-sufficiency, local food, and home-grown healthy nutrition. Collaborative activities, sharing experiences, and peer support encourage participants to try new things.
About ten project participants interested in natural raw materials took part in the company visit at Paavolan Tupa. During the two-hour session, they were introduced to the collection, utilization, and preservation of wild herbs, as well as how nature's bounty can be processed into various products.
Participants received plenty of practical tips for identifying, collecting, and using wild plants. During the visit, they tasted the Sparkling Birch Sap and the Spruce shoot drink, and also got acquainted with dried and powdered wild herbs. Many discussions ensued, and participants' questions demonstrated a keen interest in the topic.
The program also featured a playful quiz. The coffee break included goat cheese-feta pie and spruce shoot bun baked by hostess Tiina. At the end of the visit, participants toured the production facilities for birch sap products at Nature Paavola.
